Yakima Indivisible stood up for veterans by participating in the Veterans Day Parade on November 11th. Thousands of people lined the streets of Yakima on a beautiful fall day to honor veterans. Yakima Indivisible was well represented in the parade with many American flags and signs not only honoring veterans, but also showing support for veterans’ benefits being affected by current policies and cuts to veterans’ programs. The crowd response to our group was overwhelmingly positive. In an atmosphere that might have leaned to the right, hundreds of people waved, applauded and cheered our message.
Participation in community events such as the Veterans Day Parade, serves several purposes. In this case, the most important was to honor veterans. However, our visitibility in the parade also demonstrated that those who oppose the current regime are actually highly patriotic. Debunking false narratives helps brand Yakima Indivisible as a community-oriented, pro-democracy movement.
In addition to the parade entry, Y-I organized a food and clothing drive specifically oriented to veterans. Click here for more information on the success of the food and clothing drive.
