Uniting for Democracy
What is the history of the tagline?
In the spring of 2025, the Y-I Steering Committee developed the first tagline for Yakima Indivisible: Democracy That Works for Us All. The phrase definitely described the ultimate goal of Y-I, although it was a bit long for a bumper sticker or letter head. Members of the Steering Committee asked a variety of people for new suggestions. Celebrating Democracy was an option and the right length, but many felt at this moment in history our democracy is in peril and needs to be saved more than celebrated. In addition, discussions frequently turned to the need for building community in order to come together and save democracy. Heads were scratched and brains were stretched. As a result, Defending Democracy was tentatively and somewhat reluctantly selected as the tagline. However, over the weekend before the tagline was to be finalized, Janis had a brilliant idea. She suggested the phrase Uniting for Democracy which implies coming together and taking action in service of democracy. Everyone asked about the phrase loved it, so our volunteer graphic designer created new templates and within a few days our social media accounts and emails reflected this tagline. Please join us on this journey to unite and save democracy.
How can YOU utilize this tagline?
Some of our new Yakima Indivisible buttons include the phrase “Uniting for Democracy” and others include “Defending Democracy.” Several members have found these buttons and phrases to be great conversation starters. Some people just wink or smile when they see these phrases to indicate they are like-minded. Others initiate questions and want to learn more about Yakima Indivisible.
