The Building Alternatives Committee has also been busy. According to committee member Cat Stoothoff, the group decided to pick the Constitution as their focus, and chose the Sixth Amendment to focus on first in honor of June being the sixth month out of the year. “It’s a big topic right now that affects all of us, and it is under attack,” she said.
Stroothoff said that the germ of the idea came from the “Know Your Rights” postcards that Yakima Immigrant Response Network (YIRN) and other organizations are using. Those postcards educate the community about what to do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) comes to a home or workplace.
“We wanted to remind people of what the Constitution says about their due process rights and why it’s important,” Stroothoff said. She noted that the group was especially drawn to a project featuring the Constitution because they thought it would appeal to people on both sides of the political spectrum.
The group’s flyers were handed out at the Flag Day event as well as other places around town. “I hope we can share the information more widely on social media and other places as we move forward,” Stroothoff said.
